What do do call a book which interests you a lot, which you can't wait to get back to and which you discuss with your with friends laughing out loud ?
Is it an erotica, a risque, a mommy porn, a 40+ novel. May be all but not that's all. I loved fifty shades of Grey. Ok, don't think I am defending myself about liking this book which according to many is nothing but porn in print aimed at 40+ women readers. Yes, i proudly agree that i fall in this bracket of age group and i found the book immensely engaging. Now you are invited to dissect my psychology. Should i tell you as teenager i have read and appreciated Shobha De's novels which were not deemed fit for young minds back in late 80's and early 90's. Also during my graduation our group of friend went amuck laughing while discussing D.H. Lawrence whose novel Sons and Lover formed part of our English Honours curriculum and Lady Chatterley's Lover (again a taboo reading in its age) by the same author was the most recommended book amongst friends.
Agreed, 'fifty shades of Grey' is far beyond comparison with these miniature work of erotica, but so have we come beyond. Beyond the days when lyrics like 'sexy, sexy tujhe log bole' were to be re-dubbed before release in the theatres(even though the audio cassettes for the same song were easily available), beyond the days when internet came into being and teenagers had any access to mobile along with many other ways of life which have changed radically. What hasn't changed is the urge to seek pleasure, excitement and thrill. I don't know if 'Grey' was written in mind to satiate 40+ mommies or the youngsters who till now had to suffice with 'Mills and Boons' romance spiked with a scene or two of love making. Now when 'Grey' offers an assortment of 'Kinky Fuckery' ("I don't believe you said that") everyone is aghast. Looking more closely nothing has changed over the years, our basic physiological needs (food, clothe, shelter and love) remain the same. It is only the abundance of choices for these that has bewildered us and left us staggering to find a balance between passe value models and modern model of virtues which is far less judgmental and harsh.
Oh please, let me enjoy my escape with Grey.
Yes, 'Grey' tantalizes , teases and tickles. Very romantic and intimate 'Grey' loves his lady very passionately. Grey is truly fictitious, yes he is not real. Was that a revelation which left you disappointed? Well, come to terms with reality. I feel James created this character out of her own need to see someone so perfect. Grey is Perfect. Believe me. Have you come across a man who is intelligent, well read, well educated, filthy rich, knows a range of things from flying planes to sailing a boat, takes interest in assembling models gifted by his girlfriend...and never short of words while expressing his love (repeatedly) to his girlfriend. Grey comes as a package including aforementioned qualities along with mighty horse power and skills pleasurable to his girl friend. How can this be real? Do you believe Harry Potter and Hogwarts exist?
My only warning against reading this book: Ladies please use discretion while reading this book. Don't set unreasonable standards and hold undue expectations from your partner after falling in love with Grey. As he is a fictional character and we do not get them off the shelf. Till then enjoy and admit bravely yes we love Grey.
